OpenClaw is powering AI agents around the world

Open Source
Free to use, forever
24/7
Always on, always working
100% Local
Your data stays on your machine

Think of it as hiring an AI employee.

OpenClaw is open-source software that turns AI models like Claude into an always-on personal agent. It lives on your computer, connects to your tools, and works for you. Not a chatbot. An actual assistant that can research, write, build, and execute.

🧠

It remembers everything

Your agent has persistent memory. It knows your preferences, your projects, your business. It picks up where it left off every time.

🔧

It uses real tools

Browse the web. Read and write files. Run code. Send messages. Control a browser. Your agent doesn't just talk. It does things.

💬

Message it from anywhere

Talk to your agent through Telegram, Discord, Signal, iMessage, or Slack. It's like texting a colleague who never sleeps.

🔒

Private by default

Everything runs on your machine. Your conversations, your files, your data. Nothing is sent anywhere you don't control.

Always on

Your agent runs 24/7. It can work while you sleep, check things on a schedule, and ping you when something needs attention.

💼

Works for any business

From tradies to accountants. AI agents are the next competitive advantage for small businesses.

Anything you'd ask a sharp assistant to do.

Here's what people are actually using their OpenClaw agents for right now.

📧 Draft emails and messages

"Write a follow-up email to the client about the quote I sent last week"

🔍 Research anything

"Find me the top 10 construction companies in my area and summarise what they do"

📄 Write documents

"Draft a scope of work for the bathroom renovation project"

📊 Analyse data

"Look at this spreadsheet and tell me which jobs were most profitable last quarter"

🌐 Build websites

"Build me a landing page for my plumbing business with a contact form"

📋 Manage tasks

"Every Monday morning, check my calendar and send me a summary of the week ahead"

💰 Create quotes

"Generate a quote for a 3-bedroom repaint based on our standard pricing"

🤖 Run your business

"Monitor our inbox, flag urgent messages, draft replies for my review"

From zero to your own AI agent.

Follow these steps exactly and you'll have a working OpenClaw agent in about 30 minutes. Written for people who are not developers.

1

Check your computer

OpenClaw runs on Mac, Windows, or Linux. You need a computer that stays on (a Mac Mini or a spare laptop is perfect). It does not need to be powerful. 8GB of RAM is enough.

A Mac Mini M4 is the most popular choice for an always-on agent. Quiet, low power, and powerful enough to run everything. Starts at ~$599 USD.
2

Get an API key from Anthropic

OpenClaw needs an AI model to think with. We recommend Claude by Anthropic. Go to console.anthropic.com, create an account, and generate an API key. You'll pay based on usage (typically $5-50/month depending on how much you use it).

Other models work too (OpenAI, Google Gemini, local models), but Claude gives the best results for business tasks. Start here.
3

Install Node.js

OpenClaw runs on Node.js. If you're on a Mac, open Terminal (search for it in Spotlight) and paste this command:

brew install node@22

If you don't have Homebrew (the Mac package manager), install it first:

/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"
On Windows, download Node.js from nodejs.org and run the installer. On Linux, use your package manager (apt, dnf, etc.).
4

Install OpenClaw

One command. Paste this into your terminal:

npm install -g openclaw

This downloads and installs OpenClaw globally on your machine.

5

Run the setup wizard

OpenClaw has a guided setup that walks you through everything. Run:

openclaw setup

The wizard will ask you for your API key (from Step 2), let you choose a messaging channel (Telegram is the easiest to start with), and configure your agent's identity.

6

Connect a messaging app

The easiest way to talk to your agent is through Telegram. The setup wizard will walk you through creating a Telegram bot (takes 2 minutes). Once connected, you can message your agent from your phone, just like texting a friend.

OpenClaw also supports Discord, Signal, iMessage, Slack, and more. Start with one. Add others later.
7

Give your agent an identity

This is what makes OpenClaw different from ChatGPT. You write a SOUL.md file that tells your agent who it is, what it does, and how it should work. Think of it as a job description for your AI.

openclaw edit soul

Write something like: "You are my executive assistant. You help me run my plumbing business. You are direct, practical, and always thinking about saving me time."

The more specific you are, the better your agent performs. Tell it about your business, your style, your priorities.
8

Start the gateway

The gateway is what keeps your agent running in the background. Start it with:

openclaw gateway start

That's it. Your agent is now running 24/7. Send it a message on Telegram and watch it respond.

9

Start using it

Send your agent a message. Ask it to research something. Ask it to draft an email. Ask it to build you a webpage. Start small, learn how it thinks, and gradually give it more responsibility.

Pro tip: Start with one task you do every day that takes 15+ minutes. Ask your agent to do it. Once you trust it with that, add more.

Requirements

Everything you need to get started. Most people already have the hardware.

A Mac, Windows PC, or Linux machine
8GB RAM minimum (16GB recommended)
Internet connection
Anthropic API key (~$5-50/month)
Telegram account (free)
30 minutes of your time

Common questions.

Is OpenClaw free?
Yes. OpenClaw is open-source and free to install. The only cost is the AI model API (Anthropic Claude), which is pay-per-use. Most people spend $5-50/month depending on how much they use their agent.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. The setup involves pasting commands into a terminal, but you don't need to understand code. This guide walks you through every step. If you can follow a recipe, you can set up OpenClaw.
Is my data private?
Yes. OpenClaw runs entirely on your machine. Your conversations, files, and business data stay on your computer. The only external connection is to the AI model API (Anthropic), which processes your prompts but does not store them on the default API plan.
What can my agent actually do?
Research, write documents, draft emails, browse the web, read and create files, run code, build websites, analyse data, manage schedules, and much more. If you can describe it in words, your agent can probably do it or help with it.
Can it run while I sleep?
Yes. Once the gateway is running, your agent is always on. You can set up scheduled tasks, have it monitor things, and wake up to completed work.
What computer should I use?
A Mac Mini M4 is the most popular choice. It's quiet, uses very little power, and is powerful enough to run everything. But any Mac, Windows PC, or Linux machine with 8GB+ RAM will work. Many people use a spare laptop.
How is this different from ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a chat window. OpenClaw is an agent. The difference: ChatGPT answers questions. An OpenClaw agent takes action. It can browse the web, write files, send messages, build things, and work autonomously. It also has persistent memory, so it knows your business, your preferences, and your ongoing projects.
I'm a small business owner. Is this relevant to me?
Very. If you're spending hours on admin, quoting, emails, reporting, or any repetitive task, an AI agent can give you that time back. Small businesses are perfectly positioned to benefit from this. The businesses that adopt AI early will have a compounding advantage over those that don't.
